What Is Immersion Mining?
Immersion mining is a cooling method in which miners run fully submerged in a bath of dielectric fluid (a liquid that carries heat far better than air but doesn't conduct electricity). Compared to air cooling, immersion removes dust, dampens noise to near silence, stabilizes board temperatures, and supports much higher power densities air can't touch. The trade off is capital cost and operational complexity: tanks, fluid, heat exchangers, and machines that need their fans removed.

Why Firmware Matters in the Tank
An air-cooled ASIC's firmware leans on its fans constantly, for cooling, but also as a health signal: stock firmware treats missing fans as a fault. Drop that machine in fluid without telling the firmware and you get error states and fan-control logic fighting a cooling system that no longer exists. Luxor's firmware LuxOS has an immersion mode which resolves this cleanly: switch it on and all fans are disabled entirely, with no error spiral and no wasted fan wattage.
The bigger win is what tuning does with the extra thermal headroom. Fluid holds hashboards at steadier, lower temperatures through conditions that would force an air-cooled machine to throttle. That stability is exactly what overclock profiles want: step up the ladder, let the AutoTuner find the minimum stable voltage at each frequency, and keep ATM's thresholds as a safety net underneath.

Setting Up LuxOS for Immersion
- Enable Immersion Mode under Settings → Advanced Settings (or fleet-wide via Commander). All fans are disabled.
- Define temperature thresholds → target, hot, and dangerous temperatures still protect the boards, and ATM still steps the miner down if fluid temperatures climb.
- Overclock dilligently → raise the max profile or power target stepwise and let the AutoTuner stabilize each step before the next.

Do I need special firmware to mine in immersion? You need firmware that can disable fan logic cleanly. With LuxOS that's a single click.
Can I overclock harder in immersion? Generally yes — steadier, lower board temperatures support higher sustained frequencies. Step up gradually and leave thermal protections on.
Do temperature protections still work without fans? Yes. Board sensors, ATM, and the dangerous-temperature shutdown all remain active; only the fan logic is disabled.
