Firmware Features Series – PSU Bypass: Hash With Any Power Supply on LuxOS

PSU Bypass is an override for aftermarket, server, and repaired PSUs.

Firmware normally refuses to drive a power supply it can't identify. That's sensible as a default, but a dead end if your PSU is an aftermarket unit, a server conversion, or a repair the stock telemetry doesn't recognize.

What Is PSU Bypass?

LuxOS normally communicates with the miner's power supply to identify it and read its electrical state; inputs the firmware uses for power targeting and safe operation. When the PSU doesn't answer the way an OEM unit would, the safe default is to refuse to run. PSU Bypass is the explicit override: enable it, set a Bypass Voltage, and LuxOS hashes anyway, using your static value in place of telemetry. Luxor introduced it with a home-mining focus, and that's where it shines.


When You'd Use It

  • Aftermarket and server PSUs. Repurposed server power supplies are a staple of budget and home builds; bypass lets LuxOS drive hardware the OEM firmware would reject.
  • Repairs and swaps. A board-level PSU repair or a transplanted unit can stop reporting identity correctly while remaining electrically sound.
  • Home mining setups. Together with quiet-fan options and per-machine tuning, bypass is part of what makes LuxOS practical for home miners assembling systems from parts.

Two honest caveats. First, bypass trades telemetry for a constant: power readings become estimates derived from your stated voltage, so treat dashboard wattage accordingly and verify at the wall if the number matters. Second, bypass removes a safety check — it's for power supplies you trust, but not power supplies you're unsure about.

How to Enable PSU Bypass

  • Go to Settings → Advanced Settings → PSU Control in the LuxOS UI.
  • Set PSU Bypass to True.
  • Enter your Bypass Voltage — the static value LuxOS will use for power estimation. Default is 12 V; match it to your PSU's actual output.

Is PSU Bypass safe? It's an override of a safety check, so the burden shifts to you: use it with power supplies whose output and capacity you trust, and size them properly for the load.

What does the Bypass Voltage do? It's the static voltage LuxOS plugs into its power-estimation calculations in place of live PSU telemetry.

Will my power readings still be accurate? They become estimates based on your stated voltage rather than measured telemetry — good enough for tuning decisions, but verify at the wall for billing-grade numbers.

Is it on by default? No — it ships disabled, and most stock-PSU fleets never need to touch it.

PSU Bypass removes the last hardware-compatibility excuse between a working power supply and a hashing miner. It ships off, stays out of your way on recognized supplies, and is one toggle away when you need it.
