An AI GPU Just Responded to an ERCOT 4CP Signal for the First Time

  • Luxor Energy and Bentaus completed the first ever grid response from a GPU running AI inference workloads to a live ERCOT 4CP curtailment signal. Power draw was cut down to ~25% of normal operating levels from signal to verified curtailment in under 500 milliseconds, and inference workloads are unaffected.
  • GPU curtailment is a harder problem than ASIC miner curtailment. A bitcoin miner powers off and loses nothing (interruptible). A GPU curtailing mid-job risks losing work in progress. Checkpoint, pause, and resume states make lossless AI curtailment possible, and this test proved it works against a real grid signal.

What Happened

In early August 2026, a GPU running AI inference workloads received a Four Coincident Peak (4CP) curtailment signal generated by Luxor's Qualified Scheduling Entity (QSE), and ramped its power draw down to ~25% of normal consumption levels, in under 500 milliseconds. Bentaus' Ziani software executed the full loop, from signal to verified curtailment, with no operator in between and no disruption to running inference jobs.

Readers of Hashrate Index know 4CP mechanics well: demand during ERCOT's four highest system-wide 15-minute intervals of June through September sets a load's transmission charge for the entire following year. Texas miners have run curtailment strategies around it for years. What changed here is the load type. This is the first time a GPU serving AI inference has taken that same signal and acted on it.

Why GPU Curtailment Is Harder Than Bitcoin Mining Curtailment

A Bitcoin miner is the ideal flexible load because it is interruptible: shut it off, lose nothing but uptime, turn it back on. A GPU curtailing in the middle of an inference-job is a different problem. Interrupt it incorrectly, and you lose the work in progress, which is exactly why AI data centers get modeled as inflexible baseloads, and why interconnection queues treat them as such. The cheatcode that closes this gap is checkpointing: inference workloads can save state, pause, and resume where they left off.


What Comes Next

Luxor and Bentaus are now standing up a GPU cluster node to test for participation in additional ERCOT programs, with Emergency Response Service (ERS) as a future target, and to answer the economic question that matters: does a GPU cluster participating in energy programs earn more value-per-watt than one running on 100% uptime with no additional program revenue?
