Firmware Features Series – Hash on Disconnect: Mining Through Network Outages
For a miner balancing load against a generator, losing network connection can mean more than revenue.

For most miners, losing network connection means losing revenue. For a miner balanced against a power generator, losing connection can mean losing the generator. Hash on Disconnect exists for the second case.

What Is Hash on Disconnect?
Hash on Disconnect (HoD) is exactly what the name says: with the setting enabled, the miner continues hashing when its pool (or its entire network link) disappears. Stock firmware behavior is the opposite: no pool, no work, and the machine's power draw collapses toward idle. Why would anyone burn power on shares no pool will ever see? Because in some power systems, the load is the point. A flare-gas or stranded-gas site runs its generators against the mining load; if a network blip makes a megawatt of demand vanish in seconds, frequency spikes and the generator can trip, taking the whole site down with it. HoD turns the miner from a fair-weather load into a constant one.

Who Needs It (and Who Doesn't)
- Off-grid and generator-backed sites (flare gas, stranded gas, islanded microgrids): the canonical case. Load stability protects the power infrastructure itself.
- Remote sites with unreliable connectivity: satellite or rural links that drop briefly but often, where ride-through beats a stop-start cycle on the machines.
- Grid-tied fleets generally should leave it off. Paying for power with no revenue is strictly a loss when your power system doesn't need the load. (If your concern is grid programs, that's a demand response conversation, not an HoD one.)
How to Enable It and What to Pair It With
- In LuxOS, go to Settings → Advanced Settings → Stratum, and set Hash On Disconnect to True (default is False). Commander applies it fleet-wide.
- Pair it with Smart Switch, which checks for your primary pool (every 60 seconds by default) and reverts automatically when it's reachable again.
- Tune the failover plumbing to your link quality: connection timeout (default 5 s), max errors before switching pool priority (default 5), and incremental backoff for unstable networks.
Hash on Disconnect FAQ
Do I earn anything while disconnected? No. Shares can't reach a pool. HoD trades that power cost for load stability, which is the economically correct trade only when your power system requires it.
Is it on by default? No. It ships disabled, and most grid-tied operations should keep it that way.
What happens when the connection returns? The miner resumes submitting to its configured pools; with Smart Switch enabled it returns to the primary pool automatically.
Does it work with hashrate splitting? Yes. Your configured quotas resume as pools become reachable again.

Hash on Disconnect reframes the miner as energy infrastructure first and a revenue machine second, which is precisely what off-grid power systems need from it. Left off, it costs you nothing; switched on where the power system demands it, it keeps the load steady and the generator(s) balanced through an outage.
